I've been living on the internet my entire professional life. Radio presenter, then journalist, then content creator — and for the last 15 years, a wedding celebrant. All of it required one skill above everything else: being findable.

I know what it's like to run a small business that lives or dies by whether people can find you online. I also know — from years of experience in regional Australia — that most businesses are doing it wrong. Not because they're lazy or unintelligent. Because the internet is genuinely confusing, and the agencies claiming to help are either too big to care or too small to know what they're doing.

So I started The Internet by Josh Withers. A one-person agency — that's me — that builds fast, static websites and does the SEO, GEO, and local optimisation work that helps Australian businesses get found. Properly.

Why static websites?

Because they're faster. Because they're more secure. Because they're cheaper to run. And because Google rewards speed. When I build a site, it loads in under a second, scores 100 on performance tests, and doesn't have a WordPress vulnerability waiting to be exploited.

I build with Astro — a modern framework that generates pure HTML and ships zero JavaScript unless absolutely needed. The result is a website that feels instant, ranks well, and costs almost nothing to host.

Why GEO matters right now

Search engines are no longer the only way people find businesses. ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Microsoft CoPilot — people are increasingly asking AI assistants for recommendations. "What's the best mechanic in Bendigo?" "Can you recommend a wedding photographer in the Hunter Valley?"

Most businesses have zero presence in these systems. It's the same opportunity that Google Maps was in 2009 — the businesses that get in now will be the ones that dominate when the rest catch up.

A small agency by choice

I take on a small number of clients each year. Not because I can't handle more — because I won't do work I can't do well. Every client gets my attention, not a junior account manager reading from a script.

I'm based in regional Australia. I understand regional markets, regional search behaviour, and regional businesses in a way that a CBD agency simply doesn't.
